The city climbs off mostly flat land near the bay into foothills that rise past 600 feet in Crestmoor. El Camino Real cuts through the middle of town. I-280 and US 101 both pass through. I-380 links them near San Francisco International Airport. BART stops beside Tanforan on Huntington Avenue. Caltrain stops about a kilometer farther south, on tracks raised above the streets.

I-380 runs about 2 miles. El Camino Real is its only interchange between I-280 and US 101. Its overhead guide signs do not mention I-380. Ramps to southbound US 101 feed collector roads that carry airport traffic clear of the 101 main lanes.

This is the north end of the US 101 express lanes. Tolls apply weekdays between 5 a.m. and 8 p.m. During those hours every vehicle in them needs a FasTrak tag. In San Mateo County you can enter or exit them at any point.
San Bruno Avenue at the Caltrain station
The Caltrain station sits above this avenue where it meets San Mateo Avenue. Trains cross both streets and Angus Avenue on elevated tracks. These replaced the old street-level crossings. The avenue has ramps on both I-280 and US 101.
Scott Street railroad crossing
This is the city's last railroad crossing where road and tracks meet at the same level. It has crossing gates. When the signals warn of a train, stop at least 15 feet from the nearest track. Never stop on the tracks.
Skyline Boulevard at I-280
Skyline Boulevard, State Route 35, leaves I-280 at the south end of town. It runs west of the freeway and regains the ridgetop between Pacifica and South San Francisco. The I-280 ramps here are a northbound exit and a southbound entrance only.

I-380 and the US 101 express lanes are good practice for freeway merging and lane changes. The Scott Street crossing lets a student practice a gated railroad crossing. The hilly parts of Crestmoor suit hill parking. Headed downhill, turn the front wheels into the curb.
