Driving in Redwood City: What New Drivers Should Know
US 101 and El Camino Real run through Redwood City on a northwest-southeast line. Locally, that counts as north-south. Woodside Road crosses both and counts as east-west. Caltrain crosses six city streets at street level. Farm Hill Boulevard winds along the hills on the west side. Redwood Shores sits on the bay side of 101. Driving there from downtown takes you through San Carlos or Belmont.
Woodside Road and the US 101 interchange
The interchange was built in 1959. Its off-ramps are single lanes. Daytime backups can reach the freeway. The northbound off-ramp is at Seaport Boulevard. Trucks use the interchange to reach the city's port. Woodside Road also has a five-leg intersection at Broadway.
Woodside Road and the El Camino Real interchange
Woodside Road meets El Camino Real at an interchange. It crosses above the Caltrain tracks. All six street-level Caltrain crossings lie between Woodside Road and San Carlos. Farther west, Woodside Road reaches I-280 in Woodside.
Whipple Avenue and the Caltrain crossing
Whipple Avenue crosses the Caltrain tracks at street level about 170 feet east of El Camino Real. At the tracks, westbound traffic already splits into a left-turn lane, two through lanes and a right-turn lane for El Camino. The street is striped for bicyclists.
Maple, Main and Chestnut Street Caltrain crossings
At each of these street-level crossings, Pennsylvania Avenue runs beside the tracks and meets the street about 30 feet east of the rails. Main Street crosses at a severe angle. A spur track runs down the center of Chestnut Street east of Heller Street.
Farm Hill Boulevard
Farm Hill Boulevard is a winding road on the city's west side. Commuters use it to get between I-280 and downtown. It has its own exit on I-280. It forms one edge of Emerald Hills, an area of oak-studded hills.
Whipple Avenue and Main Street are good practice for railroad crossings. Pennsylvania Avenue meets Main right beside the tracks. Start across only with room to clear them. The US 101 ramps at Woodside Road suit freeway merging near trucks. Farm Hill Boulevard and Emerald Hills suit curves and hill parking.
