Driving in San Jose: What New Drivers Should Know
Driving here means large freeway interchanges. Highway 87 and I-280 meet at a four-level interchange. Downtown, light rail trains run along First and Second streets next to cars and buses. Between I-280 and Highway 85, the tracks run beside Highway 87. Almaden Expressway has signals at its major intersections. East of the city, Mount Hamilton Road climbs into the Diablo Range.
First Street and Second Street light rail transit mall
Northbound trains and buses use First Street. Southbound trains and buses use Second Street. Cars get one general lane beside a bus-only lane. The tracks sit flush with the sidewalk, and driveways cross them. Never turn in front of an approaching train.
Highway 87 crossing over Interstate 880
Highway 87 crosses over I-880 near the airport with no connecting ramps. To switch between them, drivers use First Street, Taylor Street, and Coleman Avenue. Highway 87 has a carpool lane each way. Never cross double solid lines to enter or exit one.
Joe Colla Interchange, US 101 with I-280 and I-680
Here I-680 meets US 101 and continues west as I-280. Its three flyovers rise 110 feet. Highway traffic has the right-of-way when you merge. To cross several lanes, signal and cross them one at a time.
Almaden Expressway
It widens to as many as eight lanes. Most access is at signal-controlled major intersections. Near Blossom Hill Road and Highway 85, several shopping centers share driveways with the interchange. At Highway 87 there is only a southbound exit and a northbound entrance.
Mount Hamilton Road, State Route 130
This narrow two-lane highway climbs into the Diablo Range east of the city. Near Mount Hamilton it barely fits two cars. Tight switchbacks follow. Where neither car can pass on a steep narrow road, the car facing uphill has the right-of-way.
The Joe Colla Interchange and Highway 87 are good practice for freeway merging and lane changes. First and Second streets are practice for turns across light rail tracks. Almaden Expressway is practice for large signalized intersections. Mount Hamilton Road is practice for hill driving and right-of-way on narrow roads.
