Driving in Palo Alto: What New Drivers Should Know
Oregon Expressway and Page Mill Road form the main east-west route. It is the only road in the city that links US 101 and I-280 directly. Alma Street runs beside the Caltrain tracks as an alternate to El Camino Real. Four streets cross the tracks at street level. The Charleston and Arastradero corridor connects eleven K-12 schools. Cycling is a popular way to get around.
Oregon Expressway and Page Mill Road
This county route links I-280 with US 101, where it shares an interchange with Embarcadero Road. Oregon Expressway has frequent signals. It curves under the Caltrain tracks. That underpass has flooded in heavy rain. Through traffic then detours onto Alma Street.
Alma Street and the Caltrain crossings at Churchill Avenue, Meadow Drive and Charleston Road
Alma Street runs parallel to the tracks. South of Oregon Expressway it has four lanes and a center turning lane. These three cross streets meet the tracks at street level. Caltrain expects longer gate downtimes as trains run more often. Never stop on the tracks.
University Avenue at the downtown Caltrain station
Just south of the station, University Avenue passes under the tracks and Alma Street. The transit center beside the station is the major bus hub for northern Santa Clara County. Stanford's Marguerite shuttle also stops there.
Charleston Road and Arastradero Road
This 2.3 mile residential arterial is an east-west connector for the south of the city. It connects eleven K-12 schools, including Gunn High on Arastradero Road. Arastradero Road between Foothill Expressway and Clemo Avenue has bike lanes and a protected cycle track.
Bryant Street bicycle boulevard
The city made residential Bryant Street a bicycle boulevard in the early 1980s. It removed stop signs to give cyclists priority. It also added special traffic signals and installed traffic diverters.
The Oregon Expressway and Page Mill Road ramps at US 101 and I-280 are good practice for freeway merging. Alma Street adds railroad crossings and center-lane left turns. Charleston Road, Arastradero Road and Bryant Street are good practice for school zones and sharing the road with bikes.
Start from home, work, or school. We pick up students at Palo Alto High (Paly) and Gunn High and other pickup spots across Palo Alto.
