Center Street crosses the Caltrain tracks at street level. Hillcrest Boulevard passes under the tracks instead. When signals warn of a train, the state handbook says to stop at least 15 feet from the nearest track. Never stop on the tracks.
El Camino Real at Hillcrest Boulevard
Near the station, this six-lane state highway has a raised median with left-turn bays at most intersections, plus on-street parking. Hillcrest Boulevard meets it at a signal with crosswalks on every leg. Bicyclists share the roadway with cars.
I-280 ramps at Larkspur Drive and Millbrae Avenue
Exit 41 at Larkspur Drive is a southbound exit and a northbound entrance only. Exit 40 at the avenue is a northbound exit and a southbound entrance only. Skyline Boulevard runs along the city's western edge. Night and morning fog are common in summer.

U.S. 101 and the partial I-280 ramps are good practice for freeway merging. The avenue's six lanes by the station suit lane changes. Center Street is practice for a railroad crossing. El Camino Real adds median left turns and sharing the road with bikes. West-side hills suit hill parking.
