Driving in Daly City: What New Drivers Should Know

Interstate 280 runs through the middle of town. Highway 1 joins it from Pacifica and splits off just short of San Francisco. Skyline Boulevard has medians and signalized intersections. Buses converge at the BART stations and at the Top of the Hill. Many homes sit on steep hillsides. Flat through streets are few, and bikes share them with cars and buses. Fog rolls in during spring and summer.

• Interstate 280 and the Highway 1 overlap

  This eight-lane freeway carries Highway 1 between the Pacifica exit and the 19th Avenue exit. Northbound, the 19th Avenue exit toward the Golden Gate Bridge leaves from the left side. A BART station sits beside the freeway on John Daly Boulevard.

• Skyline Boulevard and John Daly Boulevard

  Skyline Boulevard is State Route 35. It meets Highway 1 at a freeway interchange and loops around Lake Merced into San Francisco. A city safety project at the John Daly Boulevard intersection calls for sidewalks and raised pavement markers.

• Mission Street at the Top of the Hill

  Mission Street is State Route 82, the road called El Camino Real farther south. Bus service converges where it meets John Daly Boulevard at the Top of the Hill. A city project aims to slow speeds between Crocker and Templeton Avenues.

• East Market Street

  Pollicita Middle, John F. Kennedy Elementary and Susan B. Anthony Elementary sit on or near this east-west corridor. Safe Routes to School work centers on them. Within 500 feet of a school, the limit is 25 mph while children are outside or crossing.

• Guadalupe Canyon Parkway

  Built with four lanes and limited access, it links Market Street with Bayshore Boulevard past the park entrance. Fog shrouds San Bruno Mountain mornings and evenings between late June and October. Winds there run stronger than nearby. In heavy fog, use low beams.

Interstate 280 is good practice for merging at traffic speed and changing lanes before the northbound left exit. Mission Street at the Top of the Hill means sharing the road with buses. East Market Street is school zone practice. Narrow hillside streets above John Daly Boulevard suit hill parking.
