Driving in Burlingame: What New Drivers Should Know

US 101 runs along the bay side of town. I-280 follows the opposite side. El Camino Real runs parallel to US 101 and is the main route for local traffic along the Peninsula. The Caltrain line runs parallel to El Camino Real and crosses several streets at street level, Broadway included. Caltrans is renewing El Camino Real through 2029, so expect lane closures and detours.

El Camino Real along the eucalyptus rows
The historic Howard-Ralston Eucalyptus Rows line this stretch. Active Caltrans work zones keep one lane open each way instead of two. Left turns are banned inside them. McKinley Elementary's drop-off zone is on nearby Paloma Avenue.
California Drive roundabout at Bellevue and Lorton avenues
California Drive meets Bellevue and Lorton avenues at a two-lane roundabout. Yield signs control every entry. The city added highlighted crosswalks. It asks drivers to give cyclists full use of the travel lane.
Oak Grove, North Lane, Howard and Bayswater crossings
Caltrain also crosses Oak Grove Avenue, North Lane, Howard Avenue and Bayswater Avenue at street level. Limited and Express trains run through Burlingame station on California Drive without stopping. Expect a train on any track at any time.

Broadway and Howard Avenue are good practice for railroad crossings. The metered Broadway on-ramps are practice for freeway merging. El Camino Real work zones are practice for slowing down and merging early. The California Drive roundabout is practice for yielding on entry and sharing the lane with cyclists.
