Two one-way tubes under the estuary link Oakland to Alameda. Bay Bridge traffic splits into three freeways at the MacArthur Maze. In the hills, Highway 13 runs through a valley beside Montclair Village.
Embarcadero West and the Jack London Square tracks
A mainline railroad runs down the middle of Embarcadero West. BNSF, Union Pacific, and Amtrak trains use it. They share the street with cars and AC Transit buses. Never stop on the tracks. Expect a train at any time, in either direction.
Posey and Webster Street Tubes
Two parallel tunnels under the estuary connect the city with Alameda. Each tube is one-way with two lanes. The Webster Street Tube carries traffic into Alameda. The Posey Tube carries traffic back. Its approach in the city runs along Harrison Street.
MacArthur Maze
This interchange splits traffic coming off the Bay Bridge onto I-80, I-580, and I-880. Not every move is possible. Drivers on northbound I-880 cannot reach eastbound I-580 directly. Drivers on westbound I-580 cannot turn onto southbound I-880.
International Boulevard bus lanes
Tempo buses run in exclusive center lanes along much of the corridor. Vertical posts and pavement markings outline the bus-only lane between 14th and 107th Avenues. It is illegal to drive or park in a bus lane.
Warren Freeway and Montclair Village
Highway 13 is a four-lane freeway that runs largely straight through a valley along the Hayward Fault. Tall trees on its sides make it look narrower. Montclair Village sits beside it on the valley floor. The neighborhood rises to the crest of the hills.
Embarcadero West is good practice for driving near railroad tracks. International Boulevard is good practice for driving beside bus-only lanes. The tubes to Alameda suit holding a lane in a tunnel. The MacArthur Maze and Highway 13 suit freeway merging and lane changes. Montclair's hillside streets suit hill parking.
