Hesperian Boulevard is a six-lane arterial that often serves as an alternate commuter route. AC Transit Line 97 runs along it. Part of it has buffered bike lanes. I-238 meets I-880 north of the village center. Both freeways form a truck route. Lewelling Boulevard crosses a Union Pacific track at grade beside a high school. Residential streets such as Paseo Grande are two-lane and mostly tree shaded.
Hesperian Boulevard between I-880 and West A Street
A county corridor project added buffered bike lanes with green pavement markings and adaptive traffic signals. Southbound, the bike lane ends a block before West A Street to make room for double left-turn lanes. Watch for riders in the traffic lane there.
I-880 exit 30 at Hesperian and Lewelling boulevards
Northbound, this exit is signed Hesperian Boulevard. Southbound, it is signed Lewelling Boulevard. The northbound express lanes end at Lewelling Boulevard. The I-238 junction is the next exit north.
I-238 and I-880 interchange
I-238 is a six-lane freeway that links I-880 with I-580 in Castro Valley. It runs mostly east and west, but Caltrans signs it as north and south. Heavy trucks are barred from I-580 through Oakland, so I-238 and I-880 carry them instead.
Lewelling Boulevard railroad crossing
Between Hesperian Boulevard and Meekland Avenue, Lewelling crosses one Union Pacific track at grade. The road has two lanes each way and a planted median. The crossing has railroad signals. San Lorenzo High School is immediately north. Never stop on the tracks.
Paseo Grande and Hesperian Boulevard
Paseo Grande is a two-lane residential street that crosses over I-880. It meets Hesperian at Village Square, where AC Transit Line 97 stops. It leads directly to neighborhoods to the east and west, so watch for people on foot.
These roads are good practice for freeway merging and lane changes, since the I-238 junction follows exit 30 northbound. Hesperian adds right turns across a buffered bike lane, which you may enter within 200 feet of the turn. Lewelling adds a railroad crossing beside a high school.
