Driving in Berkeley: What New Drivers Should Know
Berkeley's original street grid has diverters and barriers that move most traffic out of neighborhoods and onto arterial streets. Not every map shows them. Bike boulevards such as Milvia Street and Channing Way carry less car traffic than the main streets they often parallel. BART has three stations in town. The Eastshore Freeway runs along the bay shoreline. Marin Avenue and Tunnel Road climb into the hills.
Gilman Street at I-80
Gilman Street meets I-80 at two roundabouts, one on each side of the freeway. A two-way cycle track on Gilman runs between the interchange and Fourth Street. A traffic signal controls Gilman and Fourth Street. Gilman also crosses the Union Pacific tracks at grade.
Eastshore Freeway
I-80 and I-580 share the Eastshore Freeway along the bay shoreline. In town, its exits are Ashby Avenue, University Avenue and Gilman Street. Heading north, signs read I-80 east and I-580 west. This stretch backs up during rush hour.
Ashby Avenue and Tunnel Road
Ashby Avenue is a busy east-west street that carries State Route 13. Ashby BART station sits at Adeline Street. At the foot of the hill, Ashby becomes Tunnel Road. That narrow two-lane road winds up toward the Highway 24 interchange near the Caldecott Tunnel.
Bancroft Way and Durant Avenue
South of campus, Bancroft Way and Durant Avenue each have bus-only lanes with bus-priority signals. Curbs and parked cars shield the Bancroft bikeway between Piedmont Avenue and Milvia Street. The raised Bancroft and Telegraph Avenue intersection has a bicycle-only signal phase.
Marin Avenue
In the north part of town, Marin Avenue climbs straight up a hill with a 25% grade. Cragmont Elementary's grounds run along Marin and Spruce Street. A city safety project between Shattuck and Keeler avenues includes new stop signs and hardened centerlines.
The Eastshore Freeway suits merging and lane change practice. At the Gilman roundabouts, yield to traffic already inside. At the Gilman rail crossing, never stop on the tracks. Marin Avenue suits hill driving and school zone practice. On Bancroft and Durant, cross a bus-only lane only to turn right.
