Driving Lessons in Alameda, CA

One-on-One Lessons for Teen and Adult Drivers

DMV-Certified Behind-the-Wheel Training with Local Pickup

Looking for driving lessons in Alameda? Get patient, one-on-one instruction for the skills you need. Lessons are planned around the places you drive, from the charming Park Street and Webster Street shopping districts to the waterfront roads around Bay Farm Island, the tree-lined Victorian streets of the Gold Coast, the residential neighborhoods of the West End, and the connector tubes and bridges to Oakland.

Driving in Alameda: What New Drivers Should Know

Three drawbridges and two one-way tubes cross the estuary to Oakland. The drawbridges open for boats, and car traffic has to wait. State Route 61 runs on city streets between the tubes and the Bay Farm Island Bridge, a fourth drawbridge. West of Sherman Street, Central Avenue is down to one lane each way. It has roundabouts and a two-way bike track. It also runs through school zones.

  • Posey and Webster Street Tubes

These parallel tunnels run under the Oakland Estuary. The Posey Tube carries traffic into Oakland. The Webster Street Tube carries it back. The tube route does not meet I-880 directly. Drivers take Oak Street to I-880 south or Jackson Street to I-880 north.

  • Park Street Bridge

This double-leaf drawbridge spans the Oakland Estuary to Oakland. It opens on signal for boats, and car traffic has to wait. On weekdays other than federal holidays, it need not open for boats between 8 and 9 a.m. or between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m.

  • Central Avenue roundabouts

The city's safety project adds roundabouts at Main and Pacific, Third and Taylor, and Fourth and Ballena. Its design includes a center two-way left-turn lane. Between Webster and Sherman streets, Central is also State Route 61.

  • Central Avenue cycle track

A two-way bike track runs on the bay side between Main and Eighth streets. No parking is allowed in it. Drivers may enter it only to cross into or out of a driveway. The city asks drivers to pause at each conflict point.

  • Bay Farm Island Bridge

This single-leaf drawbridge carries State Route 61 between the main island and Bay Farm Island. Traffic gates and bollards must be raised before the span opens. A bike and pedestrian drawbridge runs beside it. Route 61 then follows Doolittle Drive past Oakland International Airport.

The Central Avenue roundabouts are good practice for yielding to traffic already in them. The avenue's center turn lane and bike track suit left turns into driveways and checks for bikes. Its school zones suit watching for children. The tube route to I-880 suits lane changes and freeway merging.
