Driving in San Mateo: What New Drivers Should Know

Caltrain has three stations in San Mateo. The tracks cross 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th Avenues at street level. North of the downtown station, trains cross four streets on bridges. At Hillsdale station, the tracks pass over 25th, 28th and 31st Avenues. El Camino Real runs at street level with at least four lanes. Highway 92 is a freeway with interchanges at El Camino Real and US 101.

Caltrain crossings at 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th Avenues
Trains cross these avenues at street level. Caltrain's 2021 work at 1st, 2nd and 3rd included a fixed median with flexible posts, built to stop drivers going around lowered gates. Its 2023 project for 4th and 5th calls for four-quadrant gates and keep-clear markings.
Tilton, Monte Diablo, Santa Inez and Poplar Avenue underpasses
Just north of the downtown station, Caltrain crosses these four streets on steel bridges. The bridges were replaced in a project finished in October 2016. An exemption let Tilton keep its low clearance. The Tilton bridge clears 8 feet 6 inches.
25th, 28th and 31st Avenue underpasses
Caltrain crosses these streets on rail bridges installed in 2019. The elevated Hillsdale station spans 28th Avenue. 25th Avenue lost its street-level crossing and now dips under the tracks. 28th and 31st Avenues, once cut off by the tracks, now pass under them.
Highway 92 and El Camino Real interchange
This cloverleaf was rebuilt in 2018 as a partial cloverleaf. The loop off-ramps for westbound 92 to northbound El Camino Real and eastbound 92 to southbound El Camino Real were removed. The remaining off-ramps end at signals for left and right turns.
US 101 and Highway 92 interchange
Both directions of US 101 feed eastbound 92 with five lanes that merge into three. Caltrans is extending the outside lane to give that merge more room. The work is expected to finish in summer 2028. Expect overnight ramp closures.

The avenue crossings are good practice for railroad crossings. Never go around lowered gates. Wait for room to clear the tracks. The US 101 and Highway 92 interchange is good practice for freeway merging and lane changes. Use the El Camino Real off-ramps to practice left turns at signals.
