Driving in Hayward: What New Drivers Should Know
Downtown Hayward streets form a one-way loop, so pick your lane early. Jackson Street links downtown to I-880 and to SR 92 over the San Mateo Bridge. The bridge toll is paid westbound and electronically. Harder Road and Carlos Bee Boulevard climb to Cal State East Bay in the hills. Tennyson Road crosses Union Pacific tracks at grade next to a middle school.
The Loop on Foothill Boulevard, A Street and Mission Boulevard
These downtown streets run one way in a counterclockwise loop. Foothill carries only northbound traffic between Jackson Street and A Street. Southbound drivers on Foothill must turn right onto A Street, then left onto Mission Boulevard to head south.
Five Flags and Jackson Street at I-880
Mission Boulevard, Jackson Street and Foothill Boulevard meet at one intersection south of downtown, historically called Five Flags. East of I-880, SR 92 becomes Jackson Street, a divided surface street. The old cloverleaf at I-880 was rebuilt as a three-level interchange in 2011.

Drivers pay the toll westbound only, on the eastern side of the bridge. Tolls are all electronic, through FasTrak or a license plate account. The Clawiter Road and Eden Landing Road exit is the last free exit westbound.
Harder Road and Carlos Bee Boulevard up to Cal State East Bay
Santa Clara Street becomes Harder Road, which runs a mile and a half up the hill to the university. Carlos Bee Boulevard, a left turn off southbound Mission, is the other way up. The campus sits on a plateau above the southeast part of the city.
Tennyson Road at the Union Pacific tracks
Tennyson Road crosses the Union Pacific tracks at grade, with two lanes each way and a planted median. Bike lanes are striped in both directions. Cesar Chavez Middle School sits just north of the crossing.
Lessons can include the Loop for one-way streets and early lane choice. The Jackson Street ramps to I-880 are good freeway merging practice. Harder Road and Carlos Bee Boulevard suit hill driving. Tennyson Road adds bike lanes and a railroad crossing beside a school. Never stop on the tracks.
