Driving in Los Altos: What New Drivers Should Know
Foothill Expressway runs on the old railroad line. It parallels I-280 through the lower foothills. Foothill and El Camino Real both carry regional traffic. Sidewalks are few outside commercial zones and arterial roads. Most streets have broad dirt shoulders and no street lighting. At night, pedestrians and bicyclists are much harder to see.
Foothill Expressway between San Antonio Road and El Monte Avenue
This stretch was widened to six lanes. The widening removed the dedicated right-turn ramps and added new traffic signals. It often carries heavy commuter traffic headed to I-280 by way of El Monte. Southbound Foothill has no left turn onto San Antonio Road.
Foothill Expressway at Fremont Avenue and Loyola Corners
Access to Foothill Expressway is mostly at signalized intersections. Fremont Avenue has an interchange instead, which also serves Miramonte Avenue and Loyola Drive. At Loyola Corners, Fremont Avenue is a frontage road parallel to the expressway.
I-280 at Foothill Expressway and Grant Road
I-280 is the only freeway with an access point in the city. Exit 13 serves Foothill Expressway and Grant Road. This interchange is the southern end of Foothill Expressway. Beyond it, the road continues as North Foothill Boulevard.
Main Street downtown and its San Antonio Road entrance
Arterials and collectors ring the downtown triangle, so most through traffic bypasses Main Street. Downtown has diagonal parking and about 1,400 free public spaces. Time limits are enforced between 8 am and 6 pm, Monday through Saturday. Two medians mark the San Antonio Road entrance.
El Camino Real and San Antonio Road
El Camino Real is State Route 82 and has at least four lanes. The two roads meet on the Mountain View line. The city's plan notes multi-lane uncontrolled crosswalks at El Camino Real and San Antonio Road. Key bus stops sit along both roads.
The I-280 ramps at Foothill Expressway are good practice for freeway merging. Merge at or near the speed of traffic. The six-lane Foothill stretch suits lane changes. Downtown suits diagonal parking. On El Camino Real and San Antonio Road, do not pass a vehicle stopped at a crosswalk.
