Driving in Stanford: What New Drivers Should Know
El Camino Real, Sand Hill Road, Junipero Serra Boulevard and Stanford Avenue bound the central campus. Inside, Campus Drive has several roundabouts. Cars and bikes are meant to flow through them slowly without a full stop. Santa Teresa Street is a major bikeway between student housing and the core campus. Free Marguerite shuttles run around campus on weekdays. Page Mill Road crosses the university's rolling hills to I-280.
Campus Drive roundabouts
Roundabouts sit where Campus Drive meets Escondido Road, Bowdoin Street, Santa Teresa Street and Galvez Street, and where Serra Street meets Campus Drive East. Galvez Street has another at Arboretum Road. Yield to all traffic already in the circle, and signal when you exit.
Stanford Avenue
Between Junipero Serra Boulevard and Raimundo Way, the south side has back-in angle parking. Signal, then back into the space. Bike lanes run on both sides, with a green section at conflict areas. Traffic tables slow cars. Nixon Elementary is on the avenue.
Junipero Serra Boulevard north of Page Mill Road
Foothill Expressway ends at Page Mill Road. North of that intersection, the same road continues as Junipero Serra Boulevard and passes the back entrances to campus. A paved multi-use trail runs along it for people on foot and on bikes.
Page Mill Road between I-280 and Foothill Expressway
It starts at an I-280 interchange on the Los Altos Hills border and runs as a four-lane expressway over rolling hills. It meets Foothill Expressway at a street-level intersection. Then it descends through the Research Park with a lower speed limit and several turnoffs.
Palm Drive at El Camino Real
University Avenue crosses El Camino Real and becomes Palm Drive as it enters campus. The Palo Alto Transit Center is on University Avenue. Free Marguerite shuttles link it with campus. SamTrans and VTA buses stop there too.
Campus Drive roundabouts are good practice for yielding to traffic in the circle. Back-in spaces near Raimundo Way suit reverse parking and bike lane checks. Within 500 feet of Nixon Elementary, the limit is 25 mph or lower while children are outside. Page Mill Road's I-280 interchange suits freeway merging.
Start from home, work, or school. We pick up students at Palo Alto High (Paly) and Gunn High and other pickup spots across Stanford.
