Driving in Cupertino: What New Drivers Should Know
The eastern part of the city is flat valley floor. The western part rises into the Santa Cruz Mountains. I-280 and Highway 85 meet here. Main boulevards have several lanes and medians. Traffic lights control all major intersections. Many boulevards have bike lanes. VTA buses run on the major arteries. There is no light rail or commuter rail. A Union Pacific freight line crosses several streets at grade.
I-280 and Highway 85 interchange
Highway 85 meets I-280 here. Near the interchange, 85 runs beside De Anza College and close to Apple Park. Carpool lanes on most of 85 need at least two people during weekday peak hours. Southbound trucks over 9,000 pounds must exit at Stevens Creek Boulevard.
Stevens Creek Boulevard between Wolfe Road and De Anza Boulevard
Concrete barriers now separate the bike lanes from traffic on this stretch. The same project adds bicycle signals at Wolfe and De Anza. Along the corridor, buses mostly use the outside lane. At most stops, a stopped bus blocks that lane.
Rail crossings on Stevens Creek Boulevard, Bubb Road and McClellan Road
A Union Pacific freight track crosses all three streets at grade. Each crossing has gates and flashing lights. Each is also linked to a nearby traffic signal. Never start across unless there is room to clear the tracks.
McClellan Road and Pacifica Drive bike lanes
Separated bike lanes line McClellan Road and Pacifica Drive between Byrne and Torre avenues. The city built them in partnership with both school districts. Monta Vista High sits on McClellan. Within 500 feet of a school, the limit is 25 mph while children are outside.
Foothill Boulevard and Stevens Canyon Road
Foothill Expressway ends at I-280. Heading south, the road continues as Foothill Boulevard, then Stevens Canyon Road. Stevens Canyon Road is a winding mountain road. It passes a rock quarry and several open space preserves. It is a popular bicycle route to those preserves.
I-280 and Highway 85 ramps are good practice for freeway merging and lane changes. Stevens Creek Boulevard adds right turns across bike lanes and lane changes around stopped buses. McClellan Road has a school zone and a railroad crossing. Stevens Canyon Road is good practice for curves and passing bicyclists.
