Driving in San Carlos: What New Drivers Should Know
Elevations in the hilly western part of town reach 900 feet. West of Alameda de las Pulgas, streets follow the contours of the hills. Roads in Devonshire Canyon are narrow and winding. The city has no east-west highway, so arterials like Holly Street and Brittan Avenue serve as the main east-west routes. Holly Street meets US 101 at a full cloverleaf that cyclists and walkers also cross.

The interchange is a full cloverleaf with a six-lane overcrossing. Exit 411 serves Holly Street and Redwood Shores Parkway. Walkers and cyclists share its intersections and weaving segments with cars. In 2025 Caltrans added signage and improved crosswalk striping on the overpass.
Brittan Avenue and its southbound US 101 ramps
Brittan Avenue is a hilly arterial that reaches Crestview Drive in the far western part of town. It crosses the railroad on a grade separation. Its US 101 ramps serve southbound traffic only. Holly Street is the only other freeway access inside city limits.
San Carlos Avenue between Sycamore Street and Wellington Avenue
Work finished in April 2021 added bike lanes and curb extensions on this stretch. The same work built new traffic signals. Drivers may enter a bike lane within 200 feet of a right turn. Check blind spots for bicyclists first.
Alameda de las Pulgas at Carlmont High
Carlmont High's address is on the Alameda. Its campus straddles the Belmont city line. Tierra Linda Middle School is across the street. Within 500 feet of a school, the limit is 25 mph while children are outside or crossing.
Devonshire Canyon
Devonshire Canyon is unincorporated county land surrounded on all sides by the city. Its roads are extremely narrow and winding. Most have no sidewalks. When two cars meet on a steep narrow road and neither can pass, the uphill car has the right-of-way.
The Holly Street cloverleaf is good practice for freeway merging and yielding at ramp crosswalks. Brittan Avenue suits hill starts. Devonshire Canyon's narrow roads teach yielding on a grade. San Carlos Avenue has right turns across bike lanes. The Alameda near Carlmont High works for school zone speed control.
